What is Estriol?

Estriol is the weakest of the three forms of estrogen. It is primarily produced during pregnancy, when it is used to help maintain pregnancy. Because of this—its weakness relative to estradiol and estrone and its use during pregnancy—estriol was virtually ignored as an important estrogen for decades. Consequently, traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) didn't use estriol or analogues of it and instead relied on much stronger estradiol analogues derived from the urine of pregnant mares.

In recent years, however, an explosion of research into the benefits of estriol has changed the way doctors view this form of estrogen. It turns out that non-pregnant women also produce estriol in smaller amounts and that it has a crucial balancing effect in relation to the stronger forms of estrogen. Proper levels of estriol have been shown to combat vaginal dryness and atrophy in menopause and reduce risk of hormone-dependent cancers, including breast cancer and uterine cancer. Estriol has also been shown to reduce a woman's risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, wrinkled and aging skin, and diabetes.

Estriol and Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Because of its powerful benefits, estriol is a crucial part of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, or BHRT. BHRT relies on using exact duplicates of your natural hormones to restore hormone levels and correct hormone imbalances. If testing reveals low estrogen levels, including estriol, your BHRT program should include estriol in the proper ratio to the other estrogens. This will ensure that any symptoms related to hormone imbalance vanish and you receive the protective benefits of estriol. The doctors at Genesis Health Institute are expert at designing BHRT programs that meet women's specific and individual needs.
